Artful Pelican Enquiry
A Word from our Founder, Don Coombe
You may be aware of the work of the Coombe Trust and its homeless project Street Souls. You also may know nothing of us. Since 1957 the Coombe Trust has provided those in need with life-changing respite breaks. Since 1963 we have had a number of beautiful holiday homes at Westgate on Sea where less fortunate families, or those with children with special needs can enjoy a seaside break, often their first ever holiday. Many of the children we transport have never seen the sea. More recently, our Street Souls initiative has really captured the imagination and our wonderful ‘crew’ of volunteers are considered friends by hundreds of London’s homeless and vulnerable people. Our volunteers regularly give selflessly to us by providing food and drink, sleeping bags, toiletries, clothing, advice and smiles.
We are no ordinary art gallery; our sole aim is to support our homeless and vulnerable friends through art. Over the coming months and years, we hope to display the works of many homeless artists on our walls, such is the chaos of a homeless existence, this will take time, nurture and patience. One of this evenings artists David Hardy, was made homeless some four years ago and he credits, in no small measure our homeless initiative Street Souls for helping to turn his life around. As you can see from his work adorning our walls, David has a true gift, which, thankfully he is now able to freely display.
Our artists and other benefactors have generously agreed to donate a percentage of each work sold to Street Souls anywhere from 25% to 100% every penny after running costs (there are no salaries) will benefit London’s homeless and marginalised.
